NARA is too lopsided in its approach to Records Management with a narrow focus only documentation and preservation of records. It fails in addressing information management and the cost savings and efficiency.\u00a0 An op-ed piece by Sprehe Information Management Associates<\/a> beats the drum that the federal government is failing in terms of records management.\u00a0 The article puts the blame on NARA, but it seems like the collaboration with the GSA is what’s failing.<\/p>\n

But actually that’s not really under NARA’s mission statement.\u00a0 NARA is the independent Federal agency that helps preserve our nation’s history by overseeing the management of all Federal records. The National Archives and Records Administration Act of 1984 divided records management oversight responsibilities between NARA and the General Services Administration (GSA).\u00a0 Under the Act, NARA is responsible for adequacy of documentation and records disposition (44 U.S.C. \u00a72904(a)), and GSA is responsible for economy and efficiency in records management (44 U.S.C. \u00a72904(b)). Federal agency records management programs must comply with regulations promulgated by both NARA and GSA. (36 CFR \u00a71220.2)<\/p>\n

Sprehe argues that the GSA never tried and suggests that NARA’s mission should be widened to include an emphasis on economy and efficiency too.<\/p>\n
