{"id":7531,"date":"2017-07-21T07:00:18","date_gmt":"2017-07-21T15:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/?p=7531"},"modified":"2017-06-01T07:15:05","modified_gmt":"2017-06-01T15:15:05","slug":"security-and-iot-most-iot-devices-are-unsecured-and-open-to-hacking-and-malware","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/security-and-iot-most-iot-devices-are-unsecured-and-open-to-hacking-and-malware\/","title":{"rendered":"Security and IoT: Most IoT Devices are Unsecured and Open to Hacking and Malware"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>80 percent of all Internet of Things (IoT) devices have security flaws and are vulnerable to an attack, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iottechnews.com\/news\/2017\/jan\/20\/study-reveals-80-percent-iot-apps-left-unsecured\/\">according to a Ponemon study<\/a> made earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>That lack of security in many IoT devices is causing\u00a0a major concern among\u00a0organizations that are using or plan to use IoT in the near future. \u00a0So much so, that <a href=\"https:\/\/sharedassessments.org\/summit\/SA_2017_Ponemon_IoT_Third_Party_Risk_Report_WP.pdf\">a follow up survey by Ponemon<\/a> of businesses found that 76\u00a0percent expected that they would experience a serious attack within the next two years, and 94 percent said that an attack could be catastrophic for their business.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ponemon.org\/management\">Larry Ponemon<\/a>, chairman of the Ponemon Institute, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/article\/94-believe-unsecured-iot-devices-could-lead-to-catastrophic-cybersecurity-attack\/\">said that<\/a> &#8220;more and more enterprises are turning to IoT to improve business outcomes and this growth is creating a breeding ground for cyber attacks. What\u2019s shocking about these findings is the complete disconnect between understanding the severity of what a third party security breach could mean for businesses, and the lack of preparedness and communication between departments&#8230; \u00a0Potential risks include the ability of criminals to harness IoT devices, such as botnets, to attack infrastructure and launch points for malware propagation, SPAM, DDoS attacks, and anonymizing malicious activities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charlie_Miller_(security_researcher)\">Charlie Miller<\/a>, senior vice president with the Shared Assessments Program, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwired.com\/press-release\/new-research-reveals-lack-oversight-regarding-security-third-party-iot-implementation-2219274.htm\">said that<\/a> &#8220;given the proliferation of connected devices, today\u2019s cyber climate is evolving and organizations have to shift their focus to the security of external parties, now more than ever.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div
