The FCC has proposed to rewrite the current policy of net neutrality. \u00a0They are accepting comments on their proposal through August 18th.<\/p>\n

Supporters of Net Neutrality have declared today that today, July 12th, as\u00a0Net Neutrality Day<\/a>\u00a0and are encouraging people to tell both the FCC and their representatives not to support the proposed changes.<\/p>\n

A poll by Mozilla<\/a> found high support for the existing Net Neutrality policy across all political parties. \u00a0On average, 76 percent of Americans support Net Neutrality. \u00a081 percent of Democrats and 73 percent of Republicans say that they support it. \u00a078 percent of those polled say that they don’t trust either the current administration or Congress to protect the Internet.<\/p>\n

Loss of Net Neutrality may have a serious impact on businesses. \u00a0For example, consider a company using Internet of Things devices. \u00a0Sce Pike<\/a>, founder and CEO of \u00a0Iotas,\u00a0told Wired Magazine<\/a>, the “even though IoT devices might have smaller data packets, their usefulness is to be able to do real-time monitoring and analysis. If they are throttled, then it negates the value of IoT devices.” Communicating time-sensitive data, like for example, from smoke detectors, if slow or with long latency, can have bad consequences.<\/p>\n

The main supporters of undoing Net Neutrality are large internet providers. \u00a0Representative Ron Johnson<\/a> from Wisconsin, for example, said that<\/a> “net neutrality is a slogan. What you really want is an expansion of high-speed broadband, and in order to do that you have to create the incentives for those smaller ISPs to invest. They don\u2019t really control their own fiber if the government tells them exactly how they\u2019re going to use their investment. There\u2019s less incentive to invest, so we\u2019ll have less high-speed broadband.”<\/p>\n
