Tech companies in the EU are worried about proposed legislation<\/a> to severely restrict the use of data for text mining and big data.<\/p>\n

The proposed legislation is part of EU copyright reform and would restrict any business in the EU that has been in operation for more than three years from using data for data mining unless the \u00a0business had first obtained explicit permission from the data source that the data could be used. \u00a0This would allow new startup businesses to freely use data in big data, text mining and AI projects., but after three years, these businesses would no longer be able to collect new data without first getting permission to use the data.<\/p>\n

Lenard Koschwitz<\/a>, Director of European Affairs at Allied for Startups, said that <\/a>“we know from entrepreneurs we spoke to that they would move their business outside of Europe if this law becomes a reality,\u201d<\/p>\n

Koschwitz \u00a0said that<\/a> “the European Parliament should take a rational approach where they ask themselves, \u2018does a certain text and data mining cause any harm to the author or the rights holder?\u2019 And if the answer is no, then they should allow it. The absolute worst case scenario is that this will fortify the position of non-EU companies that conduct text and data mining outside the EU, but sell services within the union. It could lead to European innovation in data analytics and AI to die out.”<\/p>\n
