{"id":7634,"date":"2017-08-30T07:00:11","date_gmt":"2017-08-30T15:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/?p=7634"},"modified":"2017-07-30T13:53:58","modified_gmt":"2017-07-30T21:53:58","slug":"bimodal-it-manufacturers-staff-up-it-departments-to-improve-innovation-and-competitiveness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/bimodal-it-manufacturers-staff-up-it-departments-to-improve-innovation-and-competitiveness\/","title":{"rendered":"Bimodal IT: Manufacturers Staff up IT Departments to Improve Innovation and Competitiveness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The rapid advance of new technology is dividing many IT departments in half. \u00a0One half focuses on keeping the current systems up and running while a second half scouts out and tests new technologies that could be transformative for the business. \u00a0Gartner calls this split up of resources bi-modal IT.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cioinsight.com\/it-management\/innovation\/saying-goodbye-to-bimodal-it.html\">Bimodal divides IT operations and responsibilities<\/a> into two categories (Gartner definition):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mode 1 is traditional and sequential, emphasizing safety and accuracy.<\/li>\n<li>Mode 2 is exploratory and nonlinear, emphasizing agility and speed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The new technologies that are being investigated by businesses include the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and machine learning.<\/p>\n<p>Many businesses don&#8217;t currently have the right staff on board to handle Mode 2 investigations, and that has caused businesses, particularly in the manufacturing industry, to begin hiring. \u00a0Businesses are struggling to handle their mode 1 legacy systems and often don&#8217;t have any remaining resources that can be directed towards investigating new technologies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cetusnews.com\/business\/Manufacturers-Staffing-Up-for-%E2%80%98Bimodal%E2%80%99-IT--Survey.HJL-nYfKIZ.html\">A survey by Sungard<\/a> found that businesses need to dedicate, on average, 62 percent of their IT resources to just\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;keeping the lights on, responding to internal and external tickets, and carrying out administrative tasks.&#8221; \u00a0These businesses need more resources that can investigate more innovative areas. The<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cetusnews.com\/business\/Manufacturers-Staffing-Up-for-%E2%80%98Bimodal%E2%80%99-IT--Survey.HJL-nYfKIZ.html\">\u00a0Sungard survey<\/a>, for example, found that 82 percent of manufacturers were hiring staff to focus on innovation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
