Retailer Amazon has one-upped traditional IT vendors by delivering fairly reliable on-Demand computing infrastructure.\u00a0 Amazon has gotten additional credibility with a partnership that it recently entered into with IBM.<\/p>\n

In the Amazon-IBM deal, IBM will be making IBM software available via pre-configured Amazon Machine Images (AMI) that can run on the Amazon on-Demand EC2 infrastructure, letting customers access IBM software on a per-hour per-machine usage.<\/p>\n

“Off-the-shelf” AMIs already exist for popular combinations of Linux and Open Source software.\u00a0 Amazon has also recently added to their lineup AMIs running Microsoft Operating Systems.\u00a0 And there are AMIs with Oracle’s Linux, WebLogic App server, and Oracle’s 11g database available.<\/p>\n

The IBM AMI’s are not yet ready for production release and are intended now to be only used for development.\u00a0 But when final production pricing is released, it’s likely that the pricing will be low and in line with the pricing of other EC2 AMIs.<\/p>\n

The possibility that companies could use Amazon EC2 to augment their in-house data-center computing would be interesting, letting customers scale infrastructure up and down.\u00a0 IBM has on their roadmap the ability to “dynamically cloudburst to public clouds”.<\/p>\n
