Artificial Intelligence and Robotics are becoming sophisticated enough to challenge humans at nearly every task. Do we humans have a reason to worry?<\/p>\n

There is no consensus among futurists. For those that are optimistic, there are a lot of things that can go right with this new technology, but many fear the downside. There is worry of loss of jobs, an acceleration of the gap between those people who are well off and those who aren’t, and that increasingly AI and robotics will be weaponized and applied to wars.<\/p>\n

Ray Kurzweil<\/a>, Director of Engineering at Google, said that<\/a> “2029 is the consistent date I have predicted for when an AI will pass a valid Turing test and therefore achieve human levels of intelligence. I have set the date 2045 for the \u2018Singularity\u2019 which is when we will multiply our effective intelligence a billion fold by merging with the intelligence we have created.”<\/p>\n

The idea of merged intelligence is one area that is beginning to be researched more. The Allen Institute for Brain Science <\/a>has been very active in this kind of research. Studies and research have investigated a range of topics, like how to improve the quality of sleep, how to treat diseases like Parkinson’s, epilepsy, stroke and blindness, and how to enable the mind to control machinery like automobiles.<\/p>\n

Christof Koch<\/a>, chief scientist at the Allen Institute of Brain Science, in a piece for the Wall Street Journal <\/a>wrote “the 21st century will be the year of the brain. In particular, it will be the century of the human brain — the most complex piece of highly excitable matter in the known universe. It is within our reach to enhance it, to reach for something immensely powerful we can barely discern.”<\/p>\n
