Is that commercial software that you’re using really commercial? Yes, but… increasingly open source software is being repackaged and repurposed for use in a specific vertical. The 2017 Synopsys Coverity Scan Report<\/a>\u00a0finds that it is common for open source components to be packaged into commercial offerings with as much as 90 percent of the software in the commercial offering being composed of open source components. Many of today’s commercial software packages would not be possible without OSS. Many\u00a0startups too are being built totally around open source software.<\/p>\n

“OSS is now the norm,” declares Synopsys<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Synopsys testing of more than 4000 open source project found that many of today’s open source projects practice “secure development” and are managed as mature software projects.<\/p>\n

The Synopsys report found that “it is becoming crucial to be able to assess risks associated with the consumption of OSS. The potential to provide a holistic view of software risk and maturity by combining information from multiple dimensions will be essential as OSS becomes ever more pervasive in technology.\u201d<\/p>\n
