Digital storage is redefining exactly what a library is and the role and tasks of librarians. Electronic information in libraries requires almost no space to store, can be rapidly searched, and can be frequently updated. And access to library information can be done almost anywhere and at any time. The result has been a trend towards shutting down physical libraries and eliminating the role of the librarian.<\/p>\n

KMWorld argues the case for keeping the corporate librarian, but under the condition that librarians are able to make changes too.<\/p>\n

1. The librarian should be a “content czar”. Librarians need to make sure that patrons have the tools to search and find data, but more importantly they need to act as knowledge brokers to be able to identify and make available appropriate “knowledge sources”.<\/p>\n

2. Librarians need to be closely aligned with the strategic needs of their organization. Only then can the librarian identify the most cost effective knowledge sources that will aid the organization.<\/p>\n

3. Librarians should be “lead agents of change”. They need to be involved with all members of the organization. Librarians should be at the center of the creation and application of intellectual assets. The role of the librarian has the potential to grow into a position of Chief Knowledge Officer. Good librarians can make knowledge flow quickly and easily throughout the organization.<\/p>\n
