Last month Gartner<\/a> published their 2006 Hype Cycle special report on Emerging Technologies<\/a>.\u00a0 The report surveys 36 key technologies and trends and tries to assess their maturity, impact and speed of adoption.<\/p>\n

Gartner sees all things Web 2.0 right now at their peak of the Hype cycle.\u00a0 Four categories within Web 2.0 with large potential impact are identified as:<\/p>\n

\u00a0 1.\u00a0 Social Network Analysis (SNA)
\n\u00a0 2.\u00a0 AJAX<\/a>
\n\u00a0 3.\u00a0 Mashups<\/a>, and
\n\u00a0 4.\u00a0 Collective Intelligence<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Two technologies of interest on the diagram are Collective Intelligence and wikis.\u00a0 Collective Intelligence (CI)\u00a0refers to applications that can gather and focus the knowledge of groups.\u00a0\u00a0CI is\u00a0individuals working together with no centralized authority.\u00a0 Business Collective Intelligence is the kind of group knowledge\u00a0that Lew Platt, former CEO of HP, was talking about harnessing when he said “If only HP knew what HP knows”.\u00a0 Gartner sees CI applications\u00a0as a cost-effective way to produce content, metadata, software and services, and expects mainstream adoption in five to ten years.<\/p>\n

Web 2.0 components like blogs, wikis, RSS and AJAX are positioned as CI enabling technologies, transforming the web from\u00a0being read-only to something much more collaborative. \u00a0Leading the CI\u00a0class of applications are wikis<\/a>, although\u00a0 on their hype curve Gartner sees CI and Wikis as two distinct technologies and showing up at quite different locations.\u00a0\u00a0Somewhat surprising is the placment of wikis on the\u00a0“Trough of Disillusionment” even though wikis are continuing to be positively received and more widely accepted within corporate intranet environments.\u00a0\u00a0Wikis may\u00a0show up\u00a0on the trough\u00a0because\u00a0they have been\u00a0slow in receiving acceptance.\u00a0 InfoWorld first hyped wikis when they declared 2004 the Year of the Enterprise Wiki<\/a>\u00a0and the press continues to praise<\/a> the potential of wikis within the enterprise.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wikis have the advantage of being flexible and lightweight when compared to traditional Content Management systems.\u00a0\u00a0Content creation\u00a0and WYSIWYG editing is fast and easy too.\u00a0 Wikis encourage collaborative authoring, and they excel at being able to easily create links between content elements.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But there are many ways where\u00a0wikis can’t compete with traditional CM.\u00a0 For example, wikis are weak in creating hierarchical content structure; they evolve organically and hence are typically structured in a totally ad-hoc way.\u00a0 And when it comes to security, or even the concept of lifecycle information management, wikis come up short when compared to traditional CM systems.<\/p>\n

That will change.\u00a0 Technology evolves and it is likely that wikis will adopt more CM-like functionality while CM systems\u00a0take on more wiki-like characteristics\u00a0by gradually adopting Web 2.0 ease-of-use capabilities.<\/p>\n
