Relational databases have become a standard component for many applications. But they may become a thing of the past with cloud-based computing. Vendors are offering databases in the clouds, but the first generation of cloud databases, rather than being relational, are based on key\/value lookups.<\/p>\n

Relational databases are designed to achieve characteristics like simplicity, robustness, flexibility, performance, scalability, and compatibility. But to achieve an acceptable level in all of these areas, some compromises between the competing goals are needed. The result is not the most scalable, or the most flexible, but some happy medium that is tuned to achieve satisfactory to good behavior in all areas.<\/p>\n

But now, in the cloud, scalability is often the most desirable characteristic.<\/a> Today’s web based application need to be agile and to scale up and down on very little notice. And Relational databases often become a bottleneck in that scalability.<\/p>\n

An alternative that many developers are now turning to are key\/value databases. These type of databases are particularly good for applications that have the following characteristics:<\/p>\n

– Data stored is ‘document-oriented’
\n– The application software is object-oriented
\n– The data store is very cheap
\n– The highest priority is scalability<\/p>\n
