Public, private, hybrid — there are a lot of qualifiers used when describing sectors of the cloud market.\u00a0 IDC has a new one: the ‘whole cloud’.<\/a>\u00a0 The whole cloud is a sum of public, private and hybrid cloud.\u00a0 It also includes\u00a0cloud-based services, software and infrastructure-related hardware.<\/p>\n

IDC predicts<\/a> that global whole cloud revenues will reach $554 billion in 2021, double the revenues seen in 2016.<\/p>\n

Most of the money, nearly half, will be spent on public cloud services.\u00a0 And of that public cloud service money, about two-thirds will go towards software as a service.<\/p>\n

Frank Gens<\/a>, senior vice president and chief analyst at IDC, said that<\/a> “the most obvious takeaway from this forecast is that the shift to the cloud consumption model \u2013 in all its forms \u2013 is a mass movement… Equally important, though, is the steady drumbeat of tech innovation that is coming from the major public cloud suppliers, making it virtually impossible for enterprises and developers seeking advantage through IT not to embrace the public cloud.”<\/p>\n
