While the demand for storage capacity is sky-rocketing, storage units continually are becoming more sophisticated while costs continue to fall.<\/p>\n

A new standard for memory cards for digital cameras and mobile phones called SDXC <\/a>is out now with a design for an capacity of 2 terabytes to be reached in the next five years.\u00a0 The first implementations of the spec are expected to begin to roll out the door soon with initial capacities of 64 gigabytes.\u00a0\u00a0 With two terabytes you’d be able to store 480 hours of professional high-definition video.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile prices for\u00a0 USB storage devices is plummeting.\u00a0 I can remember writing not too long ago about sub-$1000 terabyte devices.\u00a0 Now sub-$100 devices are becoming available.\u00a0 Verbatim <\/a>has a $95 1-terabyte drive.<\/p>\n

Greater storage capacity is great because we continue to rack up more and more bits to be stored.\u00a0 In 2007, worldwide 281 exabytes were created.\u00a0 The Obama administration, for example, is expected to create multi petabytes of data over four years in office.<\/p>\n
