A new type of storage is expected to be used more commonly in computing devices this year: Storage Class Memory (SCM) or persisent memory (PM).\u00a0 From a software perspective, SCM works like system memory does today but it has the added feature of persistence.\u00a0 SCM has characteristics of both standard DRAM memory and SSD storage.\u00a0 Industry standards set by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) are being implemented by storage vendors like Intel<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Scott Davis<\/a>, CTO at Embotics, wrote that<\/a> “until now, we have never had the ability to directly persist a live memory data structure at such granularity and without making such an intermediate copy. These new persistent memories enable all this and at speeds that are an order of magnitude faster than flash!”<\/p>\n

Robin Harris<\/a>, chief analyst at TechnoQWAN, wrote that<\/a> “this is the beginning of a radical change in system architectures – and not a moment too soon.”<\/p>\n
