The National Science Foundation (NSF)<\/a> announced that it will provide $30 million in funding of data science and big data projects under a program grant that they’re calling BIGDATA.\u00a0 Additionally, Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) are all adding an additional $3 million to the project for cloud services.<\/p>\n

Academic computing environments typically optimize for handling scientific simulations that use very little I\/O and storage.\u00a0 The environment that is offered by cloud vendors is very different, providing high-data parallelization, intensive I\/O and high storage.\u00a0 A combination of these two environments should provide an interesting testbed for future research into data-intensive scientific research.<\/p>\n

Erwin Gianchandani<\/a>, deputy assistant director of CISE, told GCN that<\/a> “we view the realm of machine learning to process information generated from IoT devices as long-term proposition. We are marrying technologies that are continuously evolving to give researchers the ability to ask new questions based on technology capabilities.”<\/p>\n
