Malware is becoming more sophisticated and capable of evading standard antivirus software.\u00a0 A survey from Minerva Labs found that antivirus software can protect only against about 70 percent of newer types of malware.\u00a0 While the suggestion here is not to remove your antivirus software, it is a reminder that securing computers can be challenging. The Minerva survey found a majority of businesses worry that they might become victims of a data breach in the coming year.<\/p>\n

Today’s threats include worms, trojans, spyware and ransomeware.\u00a0 Antivirus software examines files and websites and checks them against a list of known vulnerabilities and problems.\u00a0 The problem is sophisticated malware can create signatures that morph quickly.\u00a0 In order to avoid detection, malware authors create code that automorphs or is frequently updated by the author so that it avoids detection.\u00a0 A study by Verizon found that nearly 99 percent<\/a> of malware is\u00a0 frequently altered or retuned by hackers to cloak the danger and avoid detection.<\/p>\n

Eddy Bobritsky<\/a>, CEO of Minerva Labs, said that<\/a> “we continue to see more complex and sophisticated threats, where traditional blocking and prevention mechanisms, such as antivirus, are no longer enough to keep endpoints safe. Beyond merely relying on baseline anti-malware solutions to protect endpoints, companies should strengthen their endpoint security architecture to get ahead of adversaries, such as blocking off attempts to get around existing security tools.”<\/p>\n
