CIOs spent 24 percent of their software purchase dollars<\/a> on Open Source software in 2008, that is up from just 10 percent in 2007.\u00a0 And as a result, Open Source software vendors like Red Hat are experiencing growth that is two to three timers higher than what the rest of the industry is experiencing.<\/p>\n

A lot of the growth in Open Source is due to the evolving definition and application of Open Source by software vendors.\u00a0 Open Source has evolved from a distribution model where vendors attempt to make money only by supplementing a full-feature set of software that could be freely downloaded and used with support and services.\u00a0 Matt Asay of Alfresco quotes Chris DiBona of Google as saying that the trouble with that early model for Open Source was “that the give-away-the-software-and-sell-support model was always doomed to scale poorly and consign its adherents to minimal relevance to the wider software market.”<\/p>\n

Over the brief history of Open Source, there already has been a lot of evoltuion and change, and today there are a variety of paths, both in terms of distribution and development, that software vendors are pursuing for making Open Source part of their business model.<\/p>\n
