There’s more data out that shows that SOA is far from becoming a dead technology.\u00a0 AMR Research<\/a> says that the number of companies that have adopted SOA in the US, China and Germany over the past year has doubled.\u00a0 And companies are dropping on average $1.4 million dollars on their SOA investments.<\/p>\n

In the retail industry, as many as 59 percent of companies have used SOA on at least one project.\u00a0 So have 58 percent of distributor companies,\u00a0 54 percent of telecom companies, and 48 percent of financial firms.<\/p>\n

Financial service companies are spending the most — 63 percent spending more than $1 million, and 30 percent of retail companies are also spending at that level.<\/p>\n

AMR thinks that the momentum being measured now behind SOA may be false.\u00a0 They warn that while spending is up on SOA, many companies are not getting good returns on their investment.\u00a0 One problem is that many companies don’t really have a long-term SOA strategy.\u00a0 Instead, they are spending on SOA because vendors are selling SOA.<\/p>\n

Another problem is that vendors sell the benefits of code reuse from SOA, but few of the SOA projects studied in the survey were able to gain much benefit around code reuse.\u00a0 The greater benefit that has been seen by these companies is around ‘agility’ — the ability to get new projects completed more quickly and better targeting requirements.<\/p>\n
