The new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) rules went to last Friday, May 25th.\u00a0 From the deluge of email sent by businesses just prior to the deadline to update you on revised privacy policy, you probably didn’t miss that.\u00a0 Despite the fact that GDPR is a regulation specific to European citizens, most large US companies also do some amount of business in Europe and will be affected by the new rules.<\/p>\n

But how will the new GDPR rules affect Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms that depend on large amounts of data? AI algorithms typically train on data collected in order to recognize patterns and to derive insight into human behavior. AI is used, for examples, with robo-advisors, that could provide advice and recommendations to users requesting financial and other information.\u00a0 Businesses that want to develop AI processes developed from data training need to be particularly careful that they do not infringe on privacy rules of GDRP.<\/p>\n

Tim Estes<\/a>, founder and president of Digital Reasoning, said that<\/a> “GDPR is a big deal for AI, because it necessitates that we think differently about how we collect and use data. For too long, tech companies have insisted that in order to receive value from their products and services, you had to give up your data.”<\/p>\n

The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation<\/a> (ITIF) said that<\/a> “the EU\u2019s new data privacy rules, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), will have a negative impact on the development and use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Europe, putting EU firms at a competitive disadvantage compared with their competitors in North America and Asia.”<\/p>\n
