5G is coming soon to your city. Eleven cities in the US will have 5G options before the end of 2018.\u00a0 The cities include Sacramento, Seattle, Atlanta and Washington D.C.<\/p>\n

Daniel Gleeson, analyst at Ovum, said that<\/a> “5G is the next generation of mobile technology. It’s going to be faster and more reliable internet speeds on your phone. But more than that, it’s all about having very reliable and quick responding connections, and that’s going to be very important for enabling new use cases for this technology.”<\/p>\n

Jefferson Wang<\/a>, partner at IBB Consulting, said that<\/a> “If you just think of speed, you don’t see the magic of all it can do.”<\/p>\n

Tim Baxter<\/a>, president of Samsung Electronics US, said that<\/a> “we are absolutely convinced that 5G is the next revolution.”<\/p>\n

The fact that it is very low latency means that it will be possible to do some actions that require near instantaneous feedback and communication.\u00a0 One example of this is that a surgeon would be able to perform remote surgery by controlling a robotic arm and monitoring the operation with a virtual reality headset.\u00a0 But many other applications that require low latency will be similarly enabled, like self-driving cars, delivery drones and smart cities.<\/p>\n

The GSMA Intelligence report<\/a> estimates that US operators will spend $100 billion on infrastructure upgrades between 2018 and 2020, getting ready for 5G capabilities.<\/p>\n
