NARA has lost a two-terabyte hard drive containing data from the Clinton presidency. NARA is the government’s central Record keeping organization, so a goof like this is an embarrassing moment.
\nA backup of the information exists, but the information contained on the drive was sensitive.\u00a0 The drive held names, more than 100,000 Social Security numbers and other information from the Clinton staff members and White House visitors.\u00a0 There is a $50,000 reward for information leading to the return.\u00a0 The drive seems to have been lost from sometime between March 2008 and April 2009.\u00a0 The agency says that the drive may have just been ‘misplaced’.<\/p>\n

\u201cNARA\u2019s use of technology appears to be focused on making NARA a museum, rather than a lead agency on life-cycle management of records for public access and government accountability,\u201d said Patrice McDermott<\/a>,\u00a0 director of OpenTheGovernment.org, a group advocating more transparency in government.\u00a0 \u201cThe issue of records management of e-mail is the iceberg below this tip. NARA\u2019s policy in this area is fatally flawed.\u201d<\/p>\n
