Microsoft, Google, Facebook, and Twitter have teamed up to create an initiative called the\u00a0Data Transfer Project (DTP).<\/a>\u00a0 The goal of DTP is to enable simple transfer of user data between different data sharing services.<\/p>\n

Some of the objectives of the initiative include:<\/p>\n

Easily available<\/strong> – data portability should be easy to use and readily available<\/p>\n

Privacy and Security<\/strong> – data transfer needs to be guarded against fraud, diversion of data and unauthorized access<\/p>\n

Focus on User’s Data<\/strong> – User data should be the focus rather than the service no which it is hosted<\/p>\n

Facebook<\/a> announced that “Moving your data between any two services can be complicated because every service is built differently and uses different types of data that may require unique privacy controls and settings. For example, you might use an app where you share photos publicly, a social networking app where you share updates with friends, and a fitness app for tracking your workouts. People increasingly want to be able to move their data among different kinds of services like these, but they expect that the companies that help them do that will also protect their data. These are the kinds of issues the Data Transfer Project will tackle.”<\/p>\n

Brian Willard<\/a> at Google wrote that<\/a> “our prototype already supports data transfer for several product verticals including: photos, mail, contacts, calendar, and tasks. These are enabled by existing, publicly available APIs from Google, Microsoft, Twitter, Flickr, Instagram, Remember the Milk, and Smugmug.”<\/p>\n
