{"id":8709,"date":"2018-09-20T07:00:05","date_gmt":"2018-09-20T15:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/?p=8709"},"modified":"2018-07-28T20:09:58","modified_gmt":"2018-07-29T04:09:58","slug":"memory-chips-how-small-can-they-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/memory-chips-how-small-can-they-go\/","title":{"rendered":"Memory Chips: How Small Can They Go?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/people\/petelee\/\">Peter Lee<\/a>, a vice-president at Microsoft Research, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/technology-quarterly\/2016-03-12\/after-moores-law\">said that<\/a> &#8220;there\u2019s a law about Moore\u2019s law: The number of people predicting the death of Moore\u2019s law doubles every two years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How small can we go?\u00a0 Scientists had thought that they&#8217;re hitting final barriers on the limits to how small computer chips can be miniaturized, until new methods are discovered. Scientists are now using nanotechnology to hit new levels of miniaturization.<\/p>\n<p>For example, researchers at the University of Alberta have come up with a technique to create computer memory at the atomic\u00a0 that is 1000 times smaller than current methods.\u00a0 They&#8217;re able to position individual atoms and create a stable configuration that persists even at above temperatures.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iqst.ca\/people\/peoplepage.php?id=304\">Roshan Achal<\/a>, a PhD student in Department of Physics who is working on the technique, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/edmonton\/memory-nanotechnology-edmonton-university-alberta-1.4761445\">said that<\/a> &#8220;essentially, you can take all 45 million songs on iTunes and store them on the surface of one quarter. Five years ago, this wasn&#8217;t even something we thought possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
