The cloud is now the dominant form for storage, according to a 2018 survey by the Enterprise Storage Forum<\/a>.\u00a0 68 percent of businesses are using the cloud for some of their storage needs, and the cloud is the top choice for new applications requiring storage.\u00a0 Drops in pricing for Flash\/SDD storage has made it more popular, but HDD storage remains as the second most commonly used storage type, following cloud.<\/p>\n

Not surprisingly, the survey found that few companies expect to not need to increase their storage needs this year. Less than 20 percent of the companies surveyed said that they expect to need one terabyte or less additional new storage.<\/p>\n

When purchasing new storage, businesses typically try to balance their performance and cost requirements.\u00a0 To a lesser extent, security and scalability factored into the purchase decision for new storage.\u00a0 Roughly three-quarters of respondents said that cost and performance were the primary factors considered when evaluating storage.<\/p>\n

Businesses said that their major challenge is keeping up with technology with refreshes to their again gear.\u00a0 Allocating additional funds to enable refresh of storage and infrastructure is a constant challenge.<\/p>\n
