The Open Source Lucene Search engine has seen a sudden roar of interest and investment so far this year. Lucene powers the search capabilities in a number of Open Source projects, including Alfresco, the leading Open Source ECM solution.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the year, Lucid Imagination adopted the Lucene search engine and formed a relationship similar to the relationship that Red Hat has with Linux.\u00a0 Lucid is a commercial venture that is attempting to standardize support for Lucene, the Open Source Apache project.\u00a0 Lucene is one the the top five Apache projects and has more than 4000 global installations.<\/p>\n

Now even the CIA has announced that it is making a sizable investment into Lucid Imagination.\u00a0 You may not know, but the CIA has a Venture Capital arm, called In-Q-Tel.\u00a0 (The ‘Q’ of the name refers to the ‘Q’ of James Bond movie fame that came up with Bond’s spy gadgets.)\u00a0 In June, In-Q-Tel made a sizable investment in Lucid Imagination.<\/p>\n

Any investment in the technology is great news, especially for users of the Lucene, like Alfresco, which will benefit through advancements of the Open Source code base.<\/p>\n
