From on-premise server hardware racks, to virtual machines, to cloud computing, and then containers, serverless computing is the next step forward in the evolution of IT infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Lately there have been questions about which is better: containers or serverless.\u00a0 James Governor<\/a>, founder and analyst at Redmonk, said that<\/a> “the problem with container infrastructures is [they] call[] for highly skilled developers and operators.”\u00a0 Developers at Stackery said that<\/a> “serverless is being driven by mainstream enterprises. We see them leapfrogging containers so they can take something off the shelf and move quickly.”<\/p>\n

Serverless Inc.<\/a> found that 82 percent of businesses surveyed were experimenting with serverless computing and that one quarter of them had previous experience with public clouds.\u00a0 Twenty percent of this group also said that they work for businesses with more than 1000 employees.<\/p>\n

Nick Rockwell<\/a>, chief technology officer of The New York Times Co. said that<\/a> \u201cI argued that serverless architectures are a huge innovation and will take over and everyone is just scared and why is everyone messing around with containers, it\u2019s stupid. The impact of serverless on productivity will be bigger than the impact of cloud.”<\/p>\n
