“Trust but verify<\/a>\u201d — it is a phrase used by Ronald Reagan in his nuclear weapons negotiations with the former Soviet Union.\u00a0 It’s actually a Russian proverb, and it is increasingly being used to describe how businesses should approach their dealing with cloud vendors.<\/p>\n

Businesses are putting great trust in their cloud vendors.\u00a0 To secure their data, to ensure up time, and to maintain their reputation.<\/p>\n

Gavan Egan<\/a>, managing director of cloud at Verizon, said that<\/a> “the biggest risk is giving up control of your data to someone else using different data centers in remote places. What happens in the event of a disaster? You’re also putting your data next to someone else’s.”<\/p>\n

Kamran Ikram<\/a>, managing director at Accenture, said that<\/a> “you can’t assume anything – it’s still your data and you are responsible for it.”<\/p>\n

Egan asks “do they understand the regulatory requirements governing payment card or health data, for example. And can they prove that they can do what they say they can do?”<\/p>\n
