Planning a strategy for data storage has evolved from one that tries to keep pace with storage growth by just buying new units. A strategy today needs to account for data security, disaster recovery, and technology capabilities like deduplication and storage virtualization.<\/p>\n

A recent survey by InformationWeek found that 79% of organizations are experiencing double-digit growth in the amount of data that they are storing. While data storage prices continue to drop, the cost of adding more storage capacity is increasing, partly due in fact to the electricity costs needed to power data centers. Electricity prices have increased 44 percent since 2004, and adding more units only adds to the costs.<\/p>\n

To save money, data administrators are looking more carefully at exactly what is being stored and identifying data that no longer needs be retained or which can be moved off to cheaper storage units for archival. Organizations find this approach to be tedious, but one that ultimately pays off.<\/p>\n

Many of the survey respondents indicated that they have a program in place to more smartly manage the information that they store. They also indicate that they spend much time researching best practice techniques around storage and new technologies like deduplication and storage virtualization.<\/p>\n
