5015.2 has been the guiding force behind many records management implementations. While it was released by the DoD, and while many RM products or implementations are never certified to the rigors required by 5015.2, the principles described in that specification have had significant influence on the practice of Records Management.<\/p>\n

Now it may be time for another newer specification for RM to take on some of that influence. Within the OMG, the government along with a group of vendors have hammered out a new specification around Records Management. What’s new this time around is the emphasis on services. The new specification is called Records Management Services<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The new spec was authored by the Government Domain Task Force in the OMG that included representatives from NARA, the Interior Department, and the General Services Administration. The new system describes a method for associating XML metadata to a record that will stay with the record across the entire lifecycle.<\/p>\n

The specification describes the content of the record’s metadata which are used to determine when a records should be deleted, moved or archived.<\/p>\n
