IoT has a lot to do with sensors<\/a>. And when you think of sensors, things like utility meter sensors, chemical sensors, temperature sensors, motion detection sensors, infrared sensors and others come to mind. Think warehouses, factories, heavy equipment, transportation and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what about the enterprise? IoT in the office or work IoT scenarios seem less likely there. There are mobile and desktop devices that could be considered as IoT nodes, but these are traditional network devices, even when you consider employee bring-your-own devices (BYODs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three categories of business-focused IoT <\/a><\/em>devices will make their way into the workplace: infrastructure, smart monitoring, and business-specific IoT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For infrastructure, there are things like heating, vending machines, and lighting. For example, smart lighting can cost efficiently manage the amount of light needed at the workplace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider the European company Lyreco<\/a>, supplier of business coffee machines for businesses. Lyreco implemented a vending machine equipped with telemetry devices that monitor the stock and operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some devices from the home are making their way into the office, like smart lightbulbs, motion sensors, and air quality sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there are also business-specific devices like large-screen displays and video conferencing. There are even smart desks that can monitor your work habits and provide coaching for when to take a break or stand or sit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
