In 2008, document capture grew by 7.7% to a $1.9 billion market, and the market will exceed $2.7 billion by 2012.<\/p>\n

The document capture market is typically divided into three sectors: ad hoc, batch image capture, and batch transaction capture.\u00a0 <\/span>The ad hoc market addresses smaller, desktop scanners, and the batch image capture and transaction sectors use higher speed scanners.\u00a0 <\/span>Ad hoc scanning is usually very low volume and allows users to import images and text to support their desktop operations.\u00a0 Batch image capture typcially is used to automate the import of documents into an ECM or document management system.\u00a0 Batch transaction processing extracts data from captured images for use in business processes.<\/p>\n

In 2008, the ad hoc sector grew by 5.1%, the batch image capture market grew 1.7%, and the batch capture for transaction sector grew 13.3%.\u00a0 This data comes from a report by Harvey Spencer Associates<\/a> (HSA), an analyst for the field of document capture.<\/p>\n

The report commented that while “often dismissed as boring because document capture uses proven technologies to convert paper into images.\u00a0 Capture is, in fact, an immature and interesting growth market that is not well understood as it has been outside mainstream IT.\u00a0 <\/span>Managing paper has always been expensive, but technologies to integrate captured data with business processes have typically followed scanning <\/span>as completely separate processes with a heavy manual content.”<\/p>\n
