2006-2007 saw a peak in the number of mergers and acquisitions happening in the information management space.\u00a0 At that time, ECM vendors were trying to fill their gaps in areas of ECM competency and bigger one-stop vendors like Oracle and IBM tried to add ECM as standard offerings in their portfolios.\u00a0 With the faltering economy, that merger activity has slowed dramatically, but now things may be slowly changing.<\/p>\n

In early September, EMC announced the purchase of eDiscovery vendor Kazeon<\/a>.\u00a0 With renewed government scrutiny and tighter requirements around company compliance after the recent financial crisis, technologies like records management and eDiscovery are becoming highly sought after capabilities.\u00a0\u00a0 And stand-alone eDiscovery vendors are becoming acquisition candidates.\u00a0 Analysts are predicting that eDiscovery will grow to a $4.6 billion market by 2010, and 2010 will be here soon!<\/p>\n

Kazeon eDiscovery was likely attractive purchase to EMC because it has what many feel is a complete solution around eDiscovery.\u00a0 Other eDiscovery vendors like Recommind and Autonomy now become likely candidates for acquisition.\u00a0 Recommind is a close partner with EMC vendor Open Text.\u00a0 Recommind is also pioneering a SaaS delivery of eDiscovery called Accelerate \/ eDiscovery on Demand.
\nIt’s interesting that EMC is purchasing Kazeon after its own apparently failed attempt at eDiscovery with SourceOne Discovery Collector, an EMC technology powered by StoredIQ, an EMC technology partner.\u00a0 EMC had announced that product just half a year ago.<\/p>\n
