Do people even remember what a mainframe is?  The answer at least to the first question is &#8216;Yes&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.compuware.com\/new-forrester-consulting-kpi-study-is-a-must-read-for-the-mainframe-2\/\">A Forrester report <\/a>found that, of those companies that still use mainframes, they&#8217;re using mainframes even more than before.  In 2018, 64 percent of them say that they&#8217;re running more than half their critical applications on mainframes, up from 57 percent in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the qualification here is the survey looked at only those companies that use mainframes.  How many businesses still use them?  Well, a lot more than I thought.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/with-the-world-embracing-cloud-computing-who-needs-mainframes\/\">Statistics from IBM on their user base<\/a> finds that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>96 of the world\u2019s top 100 banks, 23 of the 25 top US retailers, and nine out of 10 of the world\u2019s largest insurance companies run IBM&#8217;s System z mainframes.<\/li><li> Seventy-one percent of global Fortune 500 companies use System z mainframes<\/li><li> Nine out of the top 10 global life and health insurance providers process their high-volume transactions on a System z mainframe,<\/li><li> Mainframes process roughly 30 billion business transactions per day, including &#8220;most major credit card transactions and stock trades, money transfers, manufacturing processes, and ERP systems<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But will it last?  Maybe, maybe not. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/2019\/04\/17\/ibms-mainframe-sales-crashed-thats-normal.aspx\"> IBM revenues from Z Series mainframes<\/a> reported in the first quarter 2019 fell by 38 percent.  Pretty significant. But analysts attribute the fall due to the imminent announcement of the new Z-series model, the z14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To fight back against ever-capable cloud computing, IBM is also introducing cloud-like pay-per-use pricing for the Z-series computers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pund-it.com\/about-pund-it\/\">Charles King<\/a>, president of Pund-IT, wrote that &#8220;by making access to Z mainframes more flexible and \u2018cloud-like,\u2019 IBM is making it less likely that customers will consider shifting Z workloads to other systems and environments. As cloud providers become increasingly able to support mission critical applications, that\u2019s a big deal.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\" href=\"http:\/\/digg.com\/submit?url=https%3A%2F%2Fformtek.com%2Fblog%2Fcomputing-the-mainframe-strikes-back%2F&amp;title=\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lightsocial_img\" src=\"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/wp-content\/plugins\/light-social\/digg.png\" alt=\"Digg This\" title=\"Digg This\" \/><\/a><\/div><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
