IT staff are already having headaches in trying to come to grips with issues around growing amounts of data and associated storage.\u00a0 Well, the word from Gartner<\/a> is that the problems are only going to get worse.<\/p>\n

Roger Cox, research vice president at Gartner, said that a typical mid-size company today can expect in three years time to need to store seven times the amount of data that they are storing today.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you think you have complexity today, hold on to your bobby socks,\u201d Cox said. \u201cThings are going to get much more complex by 2013.\u201d\u00a0 I had to check on wikipedia to find out exactly what bobby socks<\/a> are\/were — but at any rate, Cox is implying that IT staff can expect some big upcoming challenges around data storage.<\/p>\n

The increase in data is due in part to compliance regulations and in some cases because companies have are generating more data as they open up their businesses on-line and take on 24×7 availability.<\/p>\n

Cox said that IT challenges include dealing with cuts in budgets, higher power and operating expenses, and more intent scrutiny from government regulators.\u00a0 The response to date has been intense interest in SaaS and cloud services and better utilization of computing resources by using virtual computing.<\/p>\n

Many IT shops will end up opting for combinations of strategies, sometimes using public cloud services and other times retaining in-house private storage facilities.<\/p>\n

Cloud-based services have replaced ILM (information lifecycle management) as the new storage mantra, Cox said. \u201cThis is something you are just going to have to deal with.\u00a0 Cloud storage is going to happen over the next five years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cox discussed storage technology advances that are coming onto the scene now, many of which are expected to be prevalent in three years, such as 4-TB SATA hard drives, self-tiering solid state drive storage, and encryption of data on individual storage devices.<\/p>\n

But the storage software to manage storage data is lagging.\u00a0 Cox said that “storage resource management technology has been talked about for years, but has not yet lived up to its promises.”<\/p>\n
