Edge computing refers to processing done by computers that are local to where data is generated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gartner says that<\/a> today only about 10 percent of data is created and then processed at the edge, but that will change dramatically by 2025 when 75 percent of processing will be edge computing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lot of this change is being driven by the growth of the Internet of Thing (IoT). Because IoT sensors can generate vast amounts of data, it often makes more sense to locally process and analyze data before pushing it or the processed data to other devices or to a central cloud repository.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IDC predicts<\/a> that by 2020 45 percent of all data created by IoT will be processed on the edge. Allied Market Research<\/a> says that Edge Computing will grow from a $1.7 billion market to $16 billion by 2025, a growth rate of 32 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stephen Blum<\/a>, CTO and co-founder at PubNub , said that<\/a> “the ability to position intelligence closer to users and devices represents a huge opportunity to impact business outcomes. Think indoor geolocation services, smart retail, location-based marketing and analytics, home automation \u2013 all transformed by edge computing [and] the ability to provision, manage, and centrally update the vast number of devices in the field.\u201d<\/p>\n
