Stretched corporate budgets and lean spending are hammering much of the economy now, but one bright spot among the gloom is with cloud computing.\u00a0 Gartner is predicting that cloud services will reach $56.3 billion in 2009, a 21.3% increase over 2008.\u00a0 Cloud services is on a growth track to meet $150.1 billion by 2013.<\/p>\n

Until now, cloud services have been concentrated in specific segments like human resources and payments processing, which accounted for 83% of the 2008 cloud services business.\u00a0 Gartner is predicting much greater diversification in the types of services provided by the cloud going forward.<\/p>\n

Business processes, including things such as cloud-based advertising – where the internet is used to deliver user-specific services to a prospective consumer, like with human resources and payments processing applications.\u00a0 This type of service accounted for 83% of cloud computing service companies’ revenue in 2008.<\/p>\n

Cloud infrastructure services, just one element of the cloud computing segment, is expected to reach $3.2 billion in 2009, growing at 28% annually.\u00a0 Much of this business is related to small and medium sized companies bringing their web presence on-line under shared services and also in moving their email hosting to an external provider.<\/p>\n

The benefit to companies of cloud computing is reduced internal IT costs, resulting from a shift in the burden of day-to-day maintenance to an external vendor.\u00a0 This shift allows companies to refocus, using a smaller IT staff to concentrate on IT tasks that are considered ‘business-critical’.\u00a0 Cloud computing allows companies to reduce their long-term capital acquisitions related to building up their own datacenters and instead adopt more scalable options like “pay-as-you-go” or subscriptions.<\/p>\n

Cloud computing promises to bring efficiencies and cost savings to companies.\u00a0 Of course the savings will vary based on the company and the size of the deployment.\u00a0 But most companies can expect to see big savings from their current capex and opex spending.<\/p>\n
