Digital ethics are norms for appropriate behavior on the internet. It is a prescription for how people and businesses interact online, whether it is companies engaged in commerce or individuals communicating with each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frank Buytendijk<\/a>, Vice President at Gartner, said that “many professions have specific ethical codes. Think of medical ethics, legal ethics, military ethics, scientific ethics, engineering ethics, accounting ethics, educational ethics and so on. However, in the field of information technology, ethical codes are less common, less developed and less prominent. The scope of digital ethics is broad and includes security, cybercrime, privacy, social interaction, governance, free will, and society and economy at large.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s been slow in coming, but rules and regulations for governing are beginning to form around acceptable behavior, how to handle personal information and people’s rights to information. The EU’s GDPR legislation is one example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark McDonald, research vice president at Gartner, said that “regardless of where regulations go, one thing remains. Rule-making benefits from a diversity of contribution and debate. Constructive contribution requires starting with a sharing understanding; in this case, a framework for digital regulation.”<\/p>\n
