{"id":964,"date":"2009-10-29T07:00:26","date_gmt":"2009-10-29T15:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.formtek.com\/blog\/?p=964"},"modified":"2009-10-29T07:00:26","modified_gmt":"2009-10-29T15:00:26","slug":"ecm-search-depends-on-clean-metadata","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/ecm-search-depends-on-clean-metadata\/","title":{"rendered":"ECM: Search Depends on Clean MetaData"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Accurate search depends on clean metadata, and Google&#8217;s on-line book project is an example of how not to handle metadata.\u00a0 After studying the <a title=\"ECM Search depends on clean metadata\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.informationweek.com\/blog\/main\/archives\/2009\/09\/google_books_me.html;jsessionid=BLWBIH5XKKAN5QE1GHPSKHWATMY32JVN\">project, researcher Geoffrey Nunberg<\/a> from the UC Berkeley School of Information came to the conclusion that the metadata Google is using is extremely out of whack.<\/p>\n<p>Nunberg gives one example of book publication dates that are stored in the database, something you&#8217;d think would not be that hard to capture when books are digitized. Google&#8217;s database lists more than 250,000 books with incorrect dates, many of them showing up as 1899, a date that was used as a placeholder when the actual date wasn&#8217;t known.<\/p>\n<p>Google admits that there are problems.\u00a0 Google engineering manager Jon Orwant said\u00a0 &#8220;Our providers have millions of errors like these, and we do what we can to eliminate them.\u00a0 We have made substantial improvements over the past year, but I&#8217;m sure we can all agree there&#8217;s a great deal more to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a hard problem.\u00a0 Getting and entering correct data is difficult, time-consuming and expensive.\u00a0 Without good metadata searches can be highly inaccurate, either overlooking items that should be considered or targeting items that should be overlooked.\u00a0 One suggestion for correcting the data is to open it up, much the same way as wikipedia does, to the public and letting them correct errors as they\u00a0 come across them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
