There is a small, and possibly growing movement, for users to break free of big tech collaboration portals, like Facebook and Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back in March 2018, Cher wrote that<\/a> “I did something VERY HARD 4 me\u2026 today I deleted my Facebook account.” That was followed by Elon Musk deleting SpaceX and Tesla<\/a> from Facebook. And then a list of other celebrities followed<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People are mad and scared about their privacy. Privacy, ethics and fake news are what tech backlash is all about. This has led to talk of breakups and anti-trust trials, regulations and fines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But are people really leaving? The numbers show that the tech backlash is more like fake or exagerated news. Rob Walker<\/a> in the New York Times broke out the numbers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the talk of breakup and a huge FTC fine, Facebook is still recording increased revenue and multi-billion dollar profits, new accounts, and large growth in the time people are using the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, Twitter and Snap continue to add millions of users, and the time that people are spending on social media continues to rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walker wrote that “the actual plans for [the tech backlash] tend to be vague… So it\u2019s easy to believe that there really is a roiling tech backlash that will somehow head off any dystopian outcomes, while we lean back and ask Alexa whether it\u2019s raining. In other words, it\u2019s a virtual backlash: so convincing we can really see it, if we just wear the proper goggles.”<\/p>\n
