The fiscal crisis has brought along with it cries for reform of a system that many people say is broke. But there is some debate about which system and exactly what it is that is broke.\u00a0 In any event, reform of some sort is in the wings, but many worry that side-affects similar to what was seen after Sarbanes-Oxley was rushed into law will result — vague requirements that forced many organizations to spend large amounts of money in an effort to be compliant.<\/p>\n

ARMA International has moved forward<\/a> and tried to be proactive in drafting a set of best practices around record keeping that could serve as a guiding principle internationally in the creation of new legislation.\u00a0 ARMA selected GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) which applies to account as their model for how to deal with records management.\u00a0\u00a0 ARMA’s guidelines are called Generally Accepted Recordkeeping Principles (GARP).\u00a0 The goal of the guidelines is to provide standards around achieving integrity, transparency, and accountability in recordkeeping.<\/p>\n

ARMA International assembled a working body of Records Management experts from around the globe to come up with a set of eight basic principles that should serve as a benchmark describing how recordkeeping programs should operate and how compliance should be measured.<\/p>\n
