{"id":9733,"date":"2019-12-23T07:00:20","date_gmt":"2019-12-23T15:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/?p=9733"},"modified":"2019-10-29T14:13:42","modified_gmt":"2019-10-29T22:13:42","slug":"ai-inference-processors-dedicated-chips-handling-separate-ai-workflows-is-not-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/ai-inference-processors-dedicated-chips-handling-separate-ai-workflows-is-not-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"AI Inference Processors: Dedicated Chips Handling Separate AI Workflows is not the Future"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/roboticsandautomationnews.com\/2019\/05\/24\/top-25-ai-chip-companies-a-macro-step-change-on-the-micro-scale\/22704\/\">Every tech company nowadays of any weight<\/a> has taken it on their own to design an AI chip specific to their business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amazon&#8217;s chip is called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/11\/28\/aws-launches-inferentia-ai-chip.html\">Inferentia<\/a>, designed for &#8216;power workloads&#8217; of thousands of teraflops of processing. Intel has a chip called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movidius.com\/myriad2\">Myriad 2 AI<\/a> which is designed for complex viewing and imaging applications.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/08\/23\/huawei-launches-ai-chip-ascend-910-pitting-it-against-nvidia-qualcomm.html\">Huawei <\/a>had the Ascend 910 for data centers and the Ascend 310 targeting smartwatches and smartphones.  <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/tpu\/docs\/tpus\">Google has had their general-purpose TPU<\/a> for some time. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imgtec.com\/vision-ai\/powervr-series2nx\/\">Imagination Power VR <\/a>has GPUs and chips that target smartphones, smart cars, Iot and cameras.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/en-us\/deep-learning-ai\/\">Nvidia<\/a> has been the lead of the AI chip market.  There&#8217;s Alibaba, Microsoft, and Facebook too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But is it all just hype?  Or at least severely overhyped?  Some analysts think so.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/richard-kingston-5b2215\/\">Richard Kingston<\/a>, Vice President of Market Intelligence, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/author.asp?section_id=36&amp;doc_id=1335239&amp;_mc=RSS_EET_EDT&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=link&amp;utm_medium=EETimesDaily-20191029#\">said that <\/a>&#8220;now we are in 2019, the reality of what AI can do and where it will feature is much more realistic.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/author.asp?section_id=36&amp;doc_id=1335239&amp;_mc=RSS_EET_EDT&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=link&amp;utm_medium=EETimesDaily-20191029#\">Kingston also argues<\/a> that standalone AI chips are not the future.  Adding AI as a separate chip with its own workflow while needing to coordinate with standard processors is complex and slows things down.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div
