A manifesto written by Giovanni Buttarelli<\/a>, former European chief data protection regulator, was published in late 2019. In that document Buttarelli promotes the use of data towards solving human problems rather than focusing on commercial and intrusive uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The manifesto provides a 10-point plan for achieving “sustainable privacy.” The plans provides a plan to “support a program for green digital transformation, with explicit common objectives of reducing inequality and safeguarding human rights for all, especially displaced persons in an era of climate emergency”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maria Ferrell<\/a>, Irish writer and speaker on technology, wrote that<\/a> “the manifesto\u2019s underlying ethics insist on the dignity of people, the idea that we have inherent worth, that we live for ourselves and for those we love, and to do good; and not as data-sources to be monitored, monetized and manipulated.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buttarelli wrote that “big data, AI and the internet of things should focus on enabling sustainable development, not on an endless quest to decode and recode the human mind. These technologies should \u2014 in a way that can be verified \u2014 pursue goals that have a democratic mandate… With the growing realization of the environmental and climatic emergency facing humanity, it is time to focus data processing on pressing social needs.”<\/p>\n
