Many companies are now waking up to the benefits of Email Archiving.\u00a0 Compliance is a major driver for companies adopting email archiving — state and federal regulations, like HIPAA and Sarbanes-Oxley.\u00a0 There is also eDiscovery and litigation.\u00a0 And email archiving is exteremely useful in speeding up those inevitable searches that happen when someone is looking for a piece of data that was in a long-ago email.\u00a0 Email archiving also lets companies better manage the storage of large amounts of emails and file attachments.\u00a0 It also frees up considerable space on email servers which is often a valuable commodity.
\nInterest in email archiving is growing so quickly that the market size is expected to more than double over the next four years.\u00a0 The Radicati Group estimates that the market will grow from $2.1 billion to more than $5.1 billion by 2013.\u00a0 Interest in hosted email archive solutions is growing too — roughly 25 percent of email archive systems are being sold as hosted services.<\/p>\n

Email archiving is more than just backups.\u00a0 Backups are data snapshots that enable you to reconstruct system data at the point in time that the sanpshot was taken.\u00a0 Backups are intended to help recover a system in the event of a failure and often are not kept for long periods of time.\u00a0 Archives, on the other hand, are intended to be long-lived and to represent a subset of data that needs to be saved and protected.\u00a0 Archives are also easily searchable while backups can usually be searched only after first restoring all data.<\/p>\n

So, email archive systems are great to have, and something you should consider if your organization does not already have one.\u00a0 And an email archive that is integrated with or a standard feature of a general-purpose ECM system will allow you to have a consistent and unified view of all of your organization’s data from a central interface.
