Dissatisfied with Mac OS and Google’s Android on smartphones, Facebook is investing in the development of a new Operating Systems. The approach would allow Facebook to be a “walled garden”<\/a> that would allow it total control over all aspects of mobile devices, from the processors, to operating system and the software applications. The project is led by Mark Lucovsky<\/a>, a co-author of the Windows NT operating system at Microsoft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrew Bosworth<\/a>, Facebook\u2019s head of hardware, said that<\/a> “we really want to make sure the next generation has space for us. We don\u2019t think we can trust the marketplace or competitors to ensure that\u2019s the case. And so we\u2019re gonna do it ourselves.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ficus Kirkpatrick<\/a>, manager in the Facebook\u2019s AR and VR group, said that <\/a>“it\u2019s possible that Facebook\u2019s future hardware won\u2019t need to rely on Google\u2019s software, which would entirely eliminate the control Google has over Facebook\u2019s hardware.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seven years ago, Facebook tried to build an operating system that was layered on top of Android, a project called Facebook Home<\/a>, but the attempt wasn’t well received and was ultimately scrapped.<\/p>\n
