“Every business is a software business”<\/a>, said Watts S. Humphrey<\/a>, an early software pioneer, said more than twenty years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But software needs to be maintained and checked. Quality assurance, testing and debugging all come along as part of the move to develop more software. Automated software testing tools are being created to facilitate higher quality code and rapid development of software. In 2018, the automated software testing market<\/a> was $8.5 billion, and that’s expected to grow to $20 billion by 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another tool for developing quality code is the code review. During a code review peer developers review each other’s software and suggest code changes that can improve code quality and reduce the occurrence of bugs. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now taking on the job of automating the code review task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the first AI-based Code Review tools is from the Swiss company called DeepCode<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boris Paskalev<\/a>, co-founder and CEO of DeepCode, said that<\/a> “DeepCode relies on a creative and non-trivial combination of static analysis and custom machine learning algorithms. Unlike traditional static analysis, it does not rely on manually hardcoded rules, but learns these automatically from data and uses them to analyze your program. This concept of never-ending learning enables the system to constantly improve with more data, without supervision.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paskalev said that<\/a> “the hard part is that not all developers are trained or have the time to actually spend to actually search for them and a lot of them are really tricky. Even during a normal code review uh, you can oftentimes miss some of them and the main reason is you might not necessarily be looking for this specific thing.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
