Businesses and organizations have a responsibility to act as custodians of the data that they receive from their customers and members. Their task is to ensure that personal data is protected. Increasingly people are viewing the protection of personal information as a human right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satya Nadella<\/a>, Microsoft CEO, said that<\/a> “data privacy must be seen as a human right…We need global norms to ensure trust in technology…”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But laws are needed to ensure that data privacy can be protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adam Schwartz<\/a>, a senior staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation , said that<\/a> “I think the Internet of Things is one of the many reasons why we need to have stronger consumer data privacy laws. We\u2019re in a situation where the shear volume of personal information from consumers is exploding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nadella said that “In some senses, Europe has taken the lead with GDPR and has even effectively regulated that. In our case, we took that regulation and we are in fact hoping to see more of a federal standard in the United States and in the world over.”<\/p>\n
