Cloud Computing makes IT life a lot easier in a number of ways, but one exception is in the area of governance. Keeping track of and efficiently utilizing cloud services, particularly when multiple cloud vendors are involved can be challenging. On top of that, factor in the increasing need to tightly control data privacy and security, and cloud governance becomes a challenging problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we focus on cost and utilization efficiencies, there is an area of cloud management now being called “Cloud Cost Governance.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can it help?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Real-time reports and cost forecasts. <\/strong> Tools can monitor cloud usage in real time, track trends, and compare to historical usage, to estimate the current and near-term cloud spend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Granular controls with price caps and restrictions.<\/strong> Groups and projects can be blocked from exceeding pre-allocated budget for cloud usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aggregate cost reporting across all cloud platforms. <\/strong> Multi-cloud environments can muddy the view of cloud operations. The ability to generate aggregated reports is essential to see overall costs and will help in determining the best allocation of resources across platforms to achieve cost efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

David Linthicum<\/a>, Chief Strategy officer at Deloitte Consulting, writes that<\/a> “I\u2019m often taken aback by the lack of governance of any sort when deploying on public clouds, but the lack of cost governance is truly a huge error. Many enterprises are using spreadsheets or the native cost management features of the single public clouds. If you do, plan on going over budget at some point and dealing with the fallout.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
