LiFi is short for “Light Fidelity” and is the use of light to communicate and transmit data between two devices. LiFi would be used in a way similar to WiFi, but because light is used instead of radio waves, the speed of transmission is much faster and the bandwidth is much wider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top speeds for 5G are on the order of 10 gigabits per second, but LiFi has already been tested at speeds of up to 224 gigabits per second<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LiFi is base don LED light bulbs. LED is a kind of semiconductor that can be switched on and off so quickly that the human eye doesn’t notice any flickering. The on and off states of the LED are equivalent to binary 1’s and 0’s. Photo receivers are able to pick up the light signal and convert it into content. Lasers are also being studied as an alternative to the use of LEDs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LiFi is also considered safer than 5G technology because radio frequency radiation has been associated with cancer and cell damage in humans. LiFi transmits light waves on the electromagnetic spectrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harold Haas<\/a>, one of the pioneers of Li-Fi technology, said at a TedTalk that “we have the infrastructure there. We can use them for communications. All we need to do is fit a small microchip to every potential illumination device and this would then combine two basic functionalities: illumination and wireless data transmission. In the future we will not only have 14 billion light bulbs, we may have 14 billion Li-Fi’s deployed worldwide for a cleaner, greener and even a brighter future.”<\/p>\n
