Moore’s law<\/a> is that the number of transistors in a semiconductor chip will double about every 24 months. It was an observation that Gordon Moore, co-founder of Fairchild Semiconductor and later CEO of Intel, made in 1965. The rule held steady for decades, but has been faltering as chip density is coming up against the limits of physics. In 2015, Gordon Moore said that “I see Moore’s law dying here in the next decade or so.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But chip designers at Intel think there’s still more life in Moore’s Law. Jim Keller, Intel Senior Vice President of silicon engineering, said that ” It’s going to keep going. Moore\u2019s law is relentless.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intel is pulling out new plays that they hope will enable ever more denser chips. One plan that Keller talks about is to stack transistors vertically<\/a>, layering them on top of each other, a strategy that Intel expects will increase chip density by a factor of 50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New materials and new types of transistors<\/a> too are expected to improve chip densities in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It seems still too early to write an obituary for Moore’s Law.<\/p>\n
