The future world of Artificial Intelligence is often portrayed as one where robots and software do work that was previously done by humans. But rather than totally replace humans, AI is more likely to take on the role of an assistant in the future, enhancing human capabilities rather than replacing them. This is Augmented Intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ginni Rometty<\/a>, the former CEO of IBM, said that<\/a> “I actually don\u2019t like the word AI because cognitive is much more than AI. And so, AI says replacement of people, it carries some baggage with it and that\u2019s not what we\u2019re talking about. By and large we see a world where this is a partnership between man and machine and that this is in fact going to make us better and allows us to do what the human condition is best able to do.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

David Schubmehl<\/a>, research director of Cognitive\/AI Systems at IDC, said that<\/a> “AI is really an assistant to help you get done with the mundane and mindless tasks more quickly so you can focus on the more challenging creative aspects.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gartner predicts<\/a> that the Augmented Intelligence market will create $2.9 trillion in business value and enable 6.2 billion hours of global worker productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Erik Brynjolfsson<\/a> and Andrew McAfee<\/a>, faculty members at the MIT Sloan School of Management, wrote that<\/a> “Over the next decade, AI won\u2019t replace managers, but managers who use AI will replace those who don\u2019t.”<\/p>\n
